This is one of those things that’s easier to show, than to explain.
In the pictures below, the right needle is holding the last stitches of the new round of color. On the left needle, we have the first stitch of the first round of the new color. So in these pictures, our next stitch will begin the second round of the new color.
Get the stitch below the first stitch of the first round of the new color:

Pick it up and put it on the left needle, next to the first stitch of the first round of the new color:

Knit together the picked-up stitch and the first stitch, and be on your way.

Excellent photos! Love the clarity — no confusion here.
I’ve seen these instructions before, but without seeing it, they were hard to understand. I did knit the stitch below, but then you do an increase that way, so have to decrease after that somehow, but this seems to do the trick! Thanks!

Help! Help! Could someone, anyone explain how to do a “reverse stockinette stitch”? I have started a knit from the neck down sweater, no seams and now I read “rev St St” on the shoulder . . . Please send instructions to Tiamara@aol.com Thank you.

No problem! You poor thing - I can’t imagine doing reverse stockinette for very long!
Reverse stockinette is, as the name implies, the opposite of stockinette. If you’re working back-and-forth, you will need to purl the right-side rows, and knit the wrong-side rows. If you’re working in the round, you’ll want to purl every stitch.
In a pinch, depending on the instructions, you could just flip it inside-out and knit. I once saw a pattern for an entire sweater done in reverse stockinette - I totally would have just reversed the knitting instructions, then flipped the finished sweater inside-out.
