I’m going to call this shape a “solipsis.” Because it’s not quite elliptical, but it does wrap around itself. (Get it? Ha, I kill me.)

First, knit up a long thin rectangle. I worked mine in garter stitch, and created 2 button holes at the far end. NOTE: there are much better ways to make button holes. This method is super basic, but not particuarly attractive. This method works really well, and isn’t that much more complicated.

Yarn: worsted weight
Needles: US 8/5mm
Gauge: really isn’t important - I get about 4.5 st/inch.

1. CO 60 and work 2 rows in garter stitch (knit all stitches).
2. K3, bind off 2 stitches, knit to the end of the row.
3. K56, cast on 2 stitches, K2.
4. Knit 6 rows.
5. K56, bind off 2 stitches, K2.
6. K3, cast on 2 stitches, knit to end of row.
7. Cast off all, then follow seaming instructions (below).

I would suggest that you use a less visible set of stitches - I wanted them to stand out for the pictures.

Starting with the end that does NOT have the buttonholes (i.e. with the end that will be the bottom - not with the end that will be the top flap), count 12 stitches back from the end.

Fold the strip from this point forward, and start seaming towards the end.

When you hit the corner, keep stitching!

Keep following the edge around.

Stop stitching when you reach the “hinge” - the point where you want the flap to start.

Carefully follow the vertical row of stitches over to the other side, and start another seam.

Stitch towards the flap, until you hit the other side of the “hinge.”

Done!

Looks a bit goofy, doesn’t it? With a good, serious blocking (stuff it with a wad of paper towel to help describe its shape), it will block into a more circular/disc-like/semi-triangular shape. Like this one!

  3. oooh…I play the banjo, and I’ve been needing a little pouch to keep my finger-picks in! This would be just the thing. Thanks for the idea!
