The Stash seems to be a common topic of conversation among knitters. I don’t have much of a stash, and I like it that way. There are some areas in life where I am extroardinarily methodical, and my knitting stash falls squarely within that category.

This is partly because I am a NUT when it comes to reducing clutter. I have worked hard to get my possessions down to a reasonable level - I’m not a Buddhist monk by any stretch of the imagination, but I own very few things that have no purpose.

I can see how it would be so very easy for a yarn stash to get out of hand, so I have a rule (although I recently made a one-time exception), that I am not allowed to buy yarn unless it’s for a specific project.

As a result, the contents of my stash fall into one of two categories:

1. Cheap acrylic yarn in nice colors, which I use for charity projects and for trying out new “experiments.”

2. Nice yarn left over from an earlier project, which I’m saving to one day knit into a sampler afghan.

(Knitting for charity is a great way to break down your stash, by the way.)

I only have about a dozen skeins of yarn in my stash, including partial skeins. I have a great deal of yarn on hand, but most of it is queued up for a current (binary sweater) or future (tux sweater) project. My “true” stash fits nicely into a 12-gallon plastic tote box. It’s probably the most boring stash ever, but it pleases me.
